El doctor en Microbiología Molecular y Biotecnología Horacio Bach (h), tucumano radicado en Vancouver, Canadá, se dedica desde hace cuatro años a estudiar esta bacteria, lo que lo ha llevado a descubrir el llamado “eslabón perdido” entre el bacilo de la tuberculosis y los seres humanos.“

Esta bacteria tiene la habilidad de pasar inadvertida a los complicados sistemas de defensas que poseemos.

Es capaz de esconderse y multiplicarse en un tipo de células blancas (macrofagos) que constituyen la primera barrera de defensa de nuestro organismo contra microorganismos invasores.

Para pasar inadvertida, la bacteria debe interferir con la respuesta imunológica del macrofago. Una de los principales mecanismos bloqueado por la bacteria es su destrucción en el macrofago.

Durante mi investigación, descubrimos que una proteína liberada por la bacteria dentro del macrofago es la responsable de impedir que sea destruida y, por lo tanto, puede multiplicarse”, explicó Bach durante una entrevista vía e-mail con LA GACETA.

El experto aclaró que la enfermedad es muy compleja.

“Existen otros mecanismos imunológicos del macrofago que también son bloqueados.

Nuestro descubrimiento nos permitió entender uno de ellos:
cómo la bacteria sobrevive en el macrofago”, dijo.

Nuevos tratamientosEste descubrimiento permitirá que, en el futuro, los tratamientos para curar la tuberculosis se basen en la inhibición específica de esa proteína.

“Si logramos inhibirla, la bacteria continuará su trayectoria normal y sera destruida en el macrofago”, dijo Bach.

Añadió que su equipo ha diseñado anticuerpos especiales por medio de ingeniería de anticuerpos, que bloquean la proteína.

“Comprobamos que se produce una disminución drástica en el número de bacterias que sobreviven luego de infectar macrofagos.

De esta forma, puede llegar a evitarse el tratamiento con antibióticos, los cuales toman un largo tiempo (de seis a nueve meses) para mostrar resultados positivos y presentan efectos secundarios”, puntualizó.

Bach dijo que desconoce cómo está la infraestructura para investigaciones científicas en el país, pero advirtió que para trabajar con la bacteria de la tuberculosis se requieren laboratorios de alta seguridad referente a salud pública, pues la bacteria infecta por las vías respiratorias

Luego se doctoró y continuó sus estudios en Estados Unidos.
